SPAY & NEUTER

Spays (done on female animals) and neuters (done on male animals) involve the surgical removal of portions of a pet's reproductive organs, which prevents that pet from being able to produce offspring. Millions of these simple procedures are performed safely every year.

Why Spay/Neuter?

Spaying or neutering your cat or dog makes a positive impact on your pet, you, and your community. Here's how:

  • By preventing your cat or dog from being able to reproduce, you do your part in preventing unwanted kittens and puppies. Unwanted kittens and puppies often end up feral where they can cause conflict with wildlife and other animals, or are sent to shelters. Sadly, many of these animals are unable to find a forever home and are eventually euthanized.

  • Female cats and dogs who are spayed don't go into heat, don't menstruate, and often exhibit fewer problem behaviors. Male cats and dogs who are neutered often exhibit fewer behavioral problems like aggression and territorial marking.

  • Having this procedure done may promote a longer lifespan and reduce your pet's risk of certain health conditions, including cancer of the ovaries or testes.

  • Caring for a pregnant animal or a litter of puppies and kittens can get quite expensive. In comparison, spay and neuter procedures are much less expensive.

When to Neuter or Spay Your Pet

At our New Brighton animal hospital, we stand with leading animal health organizations like the ASPCA who advise spaying or neutering dogs between the ages of 6 to 9 months, or cats before age 5 months. If your puppy or kitten is healthy, he or she can undergo this beneficial procedure as early as 8 weeks old.
